It's OK to want the fresh smell. Just don't substitute a regular washing for a spray of Febreeze.
I think your words of caution may be too late, setta. By the tone of that confession, I think we have serial Febreezer in our midst. It's ok though, hey, if I can safely walk by a Dry-el bag in the supermarket, then you too, can nip this addiction in the bud...
